Freebase vs Salt Nicotine: Which Is Right for You?

Understanding the difference between freebase and salt nicotine is the key to choosing the right e-liquid. We break down the science, the feel, and which one suits your style.

Freebase vs Salt Nicotine: Which Is Right for You?

The Basics

Nicotine in e-liquid comes in two forms: freebase and salt. Freebase nicotine has been the standard since the earliest e-cigarettes. Nicotine salt (nic salt) is a newer formulation that uses benzoic acid to lower the pH, resulting in a smoother throat hit at higher nicotine concentrations.

Freebase Nicotine

Freebase nicotine delivers a noticeable throat hit, especially at higher strengths. It's ideal for sub-ohm devices and high-wattage setups that produce large clouds. Common strengths range from 0 mg to 6 mg. The throat hit becomes harsh above 12 mg, which is why freebase is typically used at lower concentrations with more vapour production.

Nicotine Salt

Nicotine salts absorb into the bloodstream faster than freebase, providing satisfaction more quickly — similar to the nicotine delivery of a traditional cigarette. Because of the smoother throat hit, nic salts are available in higher strengths (20–50 mg) without the harshness. They're designed for low-wattage, mouth-to-lung (MTL) devices and pod systems.

Which Should You Choose?

If you're a heavy smoker transitioning to vaping, nicotine salt in a pod device will feel most familiar and satisfying. If you're an experienced vaper who enjoys big clouds and customising your setup, freebase nicotine with a sub-ohm device is the way to go. Many vapers start with salts and transition to freebase as they reduce their nicotine intake over time.
